a sneak into my beauty studio
I am so crazy excited to share this with you.
After over 3 years of slowly chipping away at a space upstairs I have finally made the finishing touches on my own little happy place. I wanted it to be a classy space for clients to come to, aswell as function as a second lounge and creative hub for my blog and Instagram work. It’s all centered around two main areas; the makeup studio and my work desk. The makeup studio is my pride and joy and has expanded THREE times since I first graduated. From humble beginnings (like.. a metre long desk with no drawers and a stand from the Warehouse to stash my kit) to the first half was a huge and amazing change. After outgrowing the drawer space (and a stupid move from me not making the first drawers deep enough) I added the second half early last year. Then came moving into the second half of the room and giving myself a space to work that inspires me and is totally seperate from my bedroom and my makeup area. I’m writing this from here, and it brings me a stupid amount of joy (YES, MARIE KONDO KINDA JOY). This area had to be done on a very tight budget and quite quickly in order to get it finished before the beginning of my busiest client season, so it’s still missing a few pieces I’m saving for or are yet to find but I absolutely love what I’ve made it into.
To save confusion- I am very lucky to still live at home with my parents (currently on that ‘hope to buy a house soon’ saving vibe ya feel) and this space was originally our shared kids lounge when we were younger. My brother and I both then stopped using it so I have slowly made it into a lounge/office/studio. I’ve purposely chosen pieces with very neutral, warm tones that I can repurpose when I have a home of my own, and have had all my joinery custom made by my lil bro at his work (legend).
ROUND COPPER MIRROR — an old piece from DAY ONE! I picked this up from Kmart in a hurry before one of my very first clients and it’s honestly one of the best and most loved pieces in this room (it helps that Dad screwed it to the wall so I have to love it..). In true Kmart fashion it’s no longer available so I’ve linked the most similar one.
FLORALS — you’ll notice dried florals scattered throughout the room (and a few fresh ones awaiting their drying phase!). This particular arrangement is a handful of flowers gifted to me as 21st presents from my nearest and dearest so are very special to me! The vase was a stress purchase (so stressful I can’t remember where it was from, and was originally meant for my bedroom) but I love how it ties in and you can see the stems!
COFFEE TABLE BOOKS — as a creative, I am constantly (and desperately) seeking out inspiration so coffee table books are so vital. Not only do their pages double as backdrops and visual ideas, but they look amazing stacked.. everywhere. I get all of mine from Book Depository.
STORAGE UNIT — this piece is from Mocka here in NZ and does everything I need it to. The original piece in this corner was a TV unit and was super heavy (and black) so along with brightening the area it also fit in the budget and stores my boring things (paper towels, hand sanitiser, you know the deal!). I got this during their Easter Sale so it was crazy cheap but will note it’s not the sturdiest wee thing, but definitely does the trick!
GOLD FRAMING — as a change from the existing black ones, I decided gold frames would be lighter and detract from the wall colour (which is no-ones favourite haha). These I picked up from Spotlight during one of their sales and they’re perfect for what I need. The only think we struggled with was hanging them… so I’m glad you can’t see the extra few holes in the wall! (PSSST: the Bondi image was taken by the wonderful Malia Rose and she has these available for purchase!!)
CERAMICS — the top of this buffet will constantly be changing and one thing I love having is assorted vases/ceramics/accessories. This trio are handmade by the Hello Dear team and I love how the peachy tones tie in with the mirror frame.

JOINERY — this one is a bit tricky because as you can see the joinery was designed specifically for the space. My little bro is currently doing his apprenticeship and with the help of Bob the Builder (DAD ♡) they managed to whip this up. Your best bet would be either contacting your local joinery specialist (think kitchen places!) or my other option was picking up a few Jolt Drawers and working them into your space with a basic desk.
RUG — purchased from iFurniture on Blenheim Road. Just a temporary piece until we re-carpet and then I’ll get a second layer of carpet made- I have found this makes the space look much bigger (as well as protecting the floor from accidental spillage).
STOOL — the most BEAUTIFUL piece from Hello Dear. I just love how well it ties into my rug and even though it isn’t my usual makeup stool it might have to be (as long as no one falls backwards haha!)
MIRROR — the pièce de résistance!! What a labour of love this one was. I actually designed the entire room (and the need to redecorate) around this mirror. In short, the only full length mirrors in our house are our wardrobes, and I have this weird thing where I don’t love bringing work into my room. So keep my room a tip and everything else as organised as my brain haha! So having a mirror for OOTD’s and whatever else I choose to use it for was going to keep my room my sleeping/zen zone. We encountered huge issues here because a) the wall is massive and b) massive mirrors are EXPENSIVE. The first quote I got was almost $1400… so then Dad and I thought, ‘shit mates let’s do it ourselves’. We managed to source the mirror (frameless) from a wholesaler through Dad’s work and built a frame in less than a day with materials all from Mitre 10. I did look into frameless mirror quotes for this size (2000 x 1000mm) from Bunnings though and that was the cheapest option. Then backed with a piece of ply, some other thin wood (builders daughter doesn’t mean I know my lingo) and painted with a Resene testpot, I ended up saving almost $1k on the original quote!
FLORAL LETTERS — so kindly gifted to me by the wonderful Gia Creative. Georgia takes custom orders for letters along with her floral walls, balloon garlands, 21st planning services and I could go on for days. These are the most wonderful gift for someone special in your life too!
ARTWORK — the entire room came together with the most insane range of art gifted to me from Gabby at Papier HQ. Gabby is a true talent and knowing my art was all hand designed here in NZ is amazing. She even customised the colours on one piece so it would tie in perfectly with my branding.

BENCH SEAT — on loan, and I love it!! I so need this piece and love it for placing handbags, jackets or even shoes (underneath!) so they don’t clutter up my desk! I decorated it with a cute set of storage bins, also from Hello Dear that house my stupidly unnecessary collection of blankets..
SIDE TABLE — I originally envisioned a couch for this space, with no side table to be seen and I’m glad the team at Freedom talked me out of it. SHOCK HORROR, it is gold. The glass on it means it doesn’t look too heavy or intrude/upstage the chairs, but it looks beautiful with a wee vase and some magazines, and houses my larger coffee table books below.
SEATING — a bit of a gamble putting white linen chairs in a makeup room but a risk I am willing to take! My superstar family helped me repaint the legs with brass gold spray paint to tie in with the table and they’re so much comfier than the Kmart chairs they replaced! I’ve learnt two things in the process of picking these chairs… The first is to not be TOO set on what you want. I envisioned a nude/pink hue that wouldn’t scream PINK but work with my branding. I saw white and it was perfect. The second is to never revisit the website after you’ve finally finished paying for all this stuff. They’re now on Clearance.. lol.
& that’s all folks!
Seriously, I hope you gained some inspiration from this. I hope if you’ve been a client of mine that this space makes you feel as special as I intend it to, and I hope you love it as much as me!
Thanks for all the love + support, as always. Never goes unnoticed.
